Benoit started his career as mechanical engineer, specialized in materials engineering, working in materials R&D before joining CERN to work with the CEA-Saclay team on the CMS magnet design. Within the CEA and CERN teams, Benoit was responsible for studies of the coil and for R&D activities on the superconductor and the coil splices. He was also in charge of industrial procurements for the CMS magnet systems. He supervised and coordinated integration and commissioning activities of the coil and its sub-systems. Since then Benoit has been in charge of the CMS magnet operation and upgrades. Within the CERN-EP-CMX group, he leads the section in charge of CMS Safety, Coordination and Infrastructure at LHC-P5, including the supervision of the CMS heavy mechanics.  Benoit has also contributed to the design studies of detector magnets for the CLIC and FCC projects, and to R&D on superconductor.
