4.2. Cooling

High performance cooling is required to evacuate the heat dissipated by the front-end electronics and to keep the silicon sensors at low temperature to mitigate radiation related effects

The R&D focuses on new and environment friendly coolants but also on methods and technologies to increase the integration and cost effectiveness of cooling systems. The task will also explore the cooling requirements of currently developing and future detectors and thermal performance validation of new synthetic refrigerants to understand the compatibility and radiation resistance at the different environments of planned lepton and hadron colliders.

In addition to new coolants and needed cooling units, the larger dimensions of future detectors call for integration of the cooling system to minimize the number of parallel lines. Minimal material budget pipework and new layout architecture shall be studied jointly with the development of cheap and radiation-hard sensors for pressure and flow readings on large number of instrumented lines.
