5. IC Technologies

ASICs for HEP should follow the microelectronics industry in order to benefit from the intrinsic density of more downscaled transistors and also the intrinsic high speed and lower power consumption. The need to follow industry is also motivated by the fact that only these newer technologies will surely be available in the future, whereas older process lines are susceptible to be discontinued. The new technologies present advantages but also challenges that have to be addressed in the context of an R&D activity.
